Superman is committed to providing safe, reliable and professional removal services. Protecting the health, safety and welfare of our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public is a core part of how we operate. This Health and Safety policy sets out the principles and practices we follow to prevent accidents, injuries and damage during our removal and relocation activities.
We prioritise safety in every aspect of our work. Management accepts overall responsibility for providing safe systems of work, safe equipment and appropriate information, instruction and training. All employees and contractors are required to follow this policy, act responsibly and take reasonable care of themselves and others who may be affected by their actions.
We are committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance and to complying with all relevant statutory duties and recognised industry standards.
Senior management oversees the implementation of this policy and ensures that adequate resources are made available for health and safety measures, including training, supervision and equipment. Managers and supervisors are responsible for planning work safely, communicating safe working procedures and monitoring compliance on site and in transit.
Every member of staff has a duty to:
Work safely and follow agreed procedures at all times.
Use vehicles, tools and lifting equipment correctly and report any defects immediately.
Report accidents, near misses and unsafe conditions without delay.
Cooperate with investigations, training and safety initiatives.
Take personal responsibility for using protective equipment where required.
Before starting any removal project, we assess the potential risks to people, property and the environment. This includes consideration of access routes, parking arrangements, stairways, lifts, manual handling tasks, loading and unloading areas, fragile items and any special requirements at the origin and destination addresses.
From these assessments we develop safe systems of work that:
Identify significant hazards and the people who may be affected.
Set out safe methods for lifting, carrying and transporting items.
Control traffic and pedestrian movement around vehicles.
Reduce the need for high-risk manual handling by using trolleys, ramps and lifting aids.
Ensure that work at height, if required, is carried out safely using appropriate equipment.
Risk assessments are reviewed and updated whenever there are changes in working practices, equipment or locations, or following incidents and near misses.
Superman maintains its vehicles and equipment to a high standard to ensure safe operation. Regular inspections and servicing are carried out in line with manufacturer recommendations and relevant regulations. Any defect that could compromise safety leads to immediate withdrawal of the vehicle or item from service until it has been repaired or replaced.
On site, our teams establish safe loading and unloading areas, paying attention to traffic flow, pedestrians, neighbouring properties and weather conditions. Where possible, vehicles are positioned to minimise reversing. When reversing is necessary, a trained team member acts as a banksman to guide the driver and protect other road users.
Manual handling is a key part of removal work and is managed carefully to reduce the risk of injury. We plan loads to be as light and manageable as possible, use mechanical aids where appropriate and allocate team sizes that reflect the nature of the items being moved.
Our staff are trained in correct lifting techniques, the safe use of moving equipment and ways to protect both their own health and customers belongings. Heavy, awkward or high-value items are approached with additional controls, which may include specialist equipment or extra personnel.
Superman provides information, instruction and training appropriate to each role. New starters receive an induction that covers key health and safety responsibilities, emergency procedures, correct use of vehicles and equipment, safe lifting and customer property protection.
Ongoing training is delivered to maintain and improve competence, including refreshers on manual handling, vehicle safety, use of protective equipment and incident reporting. Supervisors monitor work practices on site, correct unsafe behaviour and provide guidance to less experienced team members.
We recognise that our operations often take place in and around occupied homes, buildings and public areas. Our teams take steps to prevent harm to customers, visitors and the general public by:
Keeping access routes as clear as reasonably practicable.
Using caution signs or communicating where temporary hazards exist.
Minimising noise, obstruction and disturbance.
Handling customer property with care to avoid damage or creating new hazards.
Our staff are instructed to treat all premises with respect and to work tidily, removing waste materials produced by our activities.
All accidents, incidents, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to management as soon as practicable. This allows us to provide support, comply with reporting obligations and investigate the causes. Lessons learned form part of our continuous improvement process and are communicated to staff.
Emergency procedures are in place for fire, medical situations, vehicle incidents and other foreseeable events. Staff are briefed on how to respond, when to seek assistance and how to protect themselves and others in an emergency.
Superman monitors health and safety performance through inspections, incident reviews, staff feedback and management reports. Regular reviews of this policy ensure it remains relevant to the nature and scale of our removal activities and reflects current legal and industry requirements.
This Health and Safety policy is communicated to all employees and is available to customers and other interested parties on request. By following these principles, Superman aims to provide a removal service that is not only efficient and professional but also safe for everyone involved.
